Job Role Summary

  • Work with other attorneys and advisors in the Compensation and Benefits Group within the ExxonMobil Tax Department to provide legal advice and support for all aspects of U.S. employee benefits and compensation programs and activities

  • Primary clients: ExxonMobil Human Resources and Treasurers Departments

  • Job location: Houston, Texas

Primary Job Functions

  • Provide legal (including tax) advice to internal clients in all areas of U.S. employee benefits law, with particular focus on:

  • Qualified and non-qualified defined benefit pension plans

  • Executive compensation

  • Benefit-plan investments

  • Exposure to defined contribution and welfare benefit plans

  • Advise on all aspects of employee benefits-related processes: design, administration, fiduciary responsibility, income taxation, claims and appeals, litigation support, tax/law compliance

  • Proactively analyze legal trends to make policy/design or tax-planning recommendations

  • Understand the role of the company’s compensation and benefits programs in supporting a world-wide, world-class business

  • Advise on limited international benefits issues

  • Draft and negotiate contract terms with third-party administrators

Job Requirements

  • Broad exposure to ERISA and related laws, including familiarity with all aspects of employee benefits and compensation issues

  • Significant experience with defined benefit pension plans and executive compensation

  • Ability to analyze complex and changing laws and translate those laws into practical advice and business application

  • Collaborative approach to work, which is needed with management, colleagues, clients and third-party vendors

  • Strong problem-solving abilities

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work in a cross-functional and cross-cultural environment

  • Adherence to the highest ethical standards of business

Minimum Education and Work Experience

  • J.D. from an accredited law school

  • Strong college and law school record (top 1/3 of class preferred)

  • At least seven years work experience with a law firm, corporation or agency as an attorney specializing in employee benefits

  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state
