ExxonMobil Mathematical Optimization Scientist (Upstream) in Houston, Texas
ExxonMobil is looking for mathematical optimization scientists with backgrounds in operations research, management sciences, applied mathematics or engineering. We are looking for dynamic, creative, and resourceful individuals to join our efforts in broad set of oil & gas areas including both geoscience, engineering, commercial and low carbon solution. Successful candidate will work to apply various operations research technologies to support critical business decisions across the entire value chain. Design and develop complex optimization and simulation models and apply them to define strategic and tactical needs and drive the appropriate business and technical solutions.
Distill problem definitions and constraints from informal or abstract business requirements and engineering problems; and to deal with ambiguity and competing objectives.
Apply theories of mathematical optimization, including linear programming, combinatorial optimization, integer programming, network flows, nonlinear programming, PDE-constrained optimization, and algorithms to design optimal or near optimal solution methodologies.
Contribute to various stages of optimization model development and deployment.
Provide technical support and enhancements to affiliates worldwide for deployed technologies.
Research and propose use of new technologies.
EXPECTED LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY
Ph.D. in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research, or other related scientific disciplines is preferred.
Strong computational modeling and algorithmic skills is required.
Seeking candidates ranging in experience level from new graduate to mid-career.
Proven track record of solving challenging problems and influencing business partners is an advantage.
Strong background in modeling large scale discrete, nonlinear, or stochastic mathematical optimization models and developing efficient optimization algorithms is required.
Ability to convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-technical audience is required.
Expert in at least one major programming language (C/C++, C#, Java, Python, etc.) or optimization modeling language (e.g. AMPL, GAMS, AIMMS, OPL, etc.) is required.
Demonstrated communication skills and software development skills in a collaborative team environment is required.
A desire and an ability to grow into new science areas is required.
Experience in the petrochemical industry or geoscience is not required, but is an advantage.
Demonstrated ability to mentor other optimization scientists is an advantage.
Demonstrated ability to accelerate the digital maturity of business partners is an advantage.
