ExxonMobil Metocean Engineer in Houston, Texas
Job Role Summary
We are planning to hire an experienced Metocean Specialist/Engineer to work out of ExxonMobil’s Houston Campus in the United States of America. The candidate would be part of ExxonMobil’s Marine Engineering team in ExxonMobil Technology and Engineering Company. Metocean Engineers provide Corporate-wide technical and advisory support in the areas of meteorology and physical oceanography, responsible for developing and applying metocean criteria for ExxonMobil’s diverse, global portfolio of assets, new developments, and industry-led initiatives.
A list of potential job responsibilities and desirable qualifications is provided below. We will be interested in candidates that possess several of these target experiences.
Primary Job Functions
Develop, specify, and apply metocean criteria for wide variety of activities, developments, and operations, i.e. large-scale capital projects, drilling programs, offshore installation activities, downstream operations, low carbon solutions opportunities, and marine transportation
Participate in metocean industry activities (e.g. OTC, metocean JIP week, industry committees)
Evaluate the strengths and shortcomings inherent in hindcast data, and apply appropriate corrections when developing fit-for-purpose metocean criteria
Conduct metocean risk assessments; identify and communicate uncertainties in definition of metocean criteria, as well as biases in metocean data/statistical analyses and means to account for them
Lead / run measurements and metocean collection projects / campaigns
Facilitate key metocean issue identification and resolution approaches
Interface with people from different disciplines (e.g. marine, risers, pipelines) to align on work scopes and work products
Interface with suppliers, contractors, and other third parties to ensure work products are in alignment with ExxonMobil expectations
Review work products by external contractors
Provide management with sound recommendations and context for conducting a metocean study / measurement campaign
Monitor and provide engineering oversight of third party engineering contractors and service providers to various Business Units
Steward ExxonMobil’s metocean software and tools
Mentor and guide less experienced engineers in the area of metocean
Sustain and promote ExxonMobil’s safety culture
Job Requirements
Advanced degree (e.g. Masters of Science (MS) and/or PhD) in Meteorology or Physical Oceanography or closely related science. Can complement with engineering degrees in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Coastal Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or closely related field
General knowledge of floating asset types (e.g. Spar, TLP, FPSO, FSO, FSRU, FLNG) in terms of concept description, key features, application range and operations
Five to ten years’ experience in the oil and gas industry, or closely related professional engineering experience
Five or more years of relevant experience working directly in the development of metocean criteria
Experienced in mathematical, statistical, and reliability analyses
Working knowledge of metocean codes, standards and practices and their application (e.g. ABS, DNV, API, ISO codes etc.)
Demonstrated long-term interest in working in the area of metocean
Willing and able to travel, as required, for short periods to support specialized technical activities
Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Broad knowledge of industry standards, best practices, and related work processes
Ability to adapt to tight deadlines and frequent changes in priorities
Strong leadership, influencing, and interpersonal skills
Strong organizational, coordination, planning, and interface skills
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
