Job Role Summary

The New Mexico Public and Government Affairs (P&GA) Advisor is responsible for the development and effective implementation of integrated external engagement strategies for ExxonMobil’s activities in New Mexico. The P&GA Advisor will develop and implement a stakeholder engagement strategy.

The P&GA Advisor will be responsible for maintaining an in-depth awareness of external political and economic factors that may impact ExxonMobil’s business activities in New Mexico, and creating effective strategies and plans to support the company’s business objectives.

This position will be located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and will report to the New Mexico Public Government Affairs and Permian Operations Manager.

Primary Job Functions

  • Establish public and government affairs (P&GA) strategies and plans with a particular focus on areas outside traditional oil and gas operations, including community engagement, communications, issues management and emergency response support.

  • Build relationships with external stakeholders in New Mexico, including community members, Native American tribes, influential civic groups, non-profit organizations, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders.

  • Support the P&GA Manager in engagement with city and county officials outside of traditional oil and gas producing areas and in identification of potential partnership/ program opportunities.

  • Participate in relevant trade organization committees.

  • Support the company’s reputation for operational excellence and lead planning and execution of major sponsorships and events in New Mexico.

  • Identify opportunities (conferences, sponsorships, etc.) to position the company favorably with key civic and community stakeholders as well as the general public.

  • Conduct annual public opinion survey, communications and influencing initiatives.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Public Affairs, government relations, political science, public policy, media relations, communications or related field.

  • 7-10 years of relevant work experience including stakeholder engagement or advocacy. Prior legislative experience a plus.

  • Ability to convey complex, legal or scientific positions in a concise manner to a variety of external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to work under time pressure, prioritize work demands from multiple business clients and to meet deadlines within an organization driven by high standards and strong processes.

  • Adherence to the Standards of Business Conduct of Exxon Mobil Corporation.

Preferred Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities

  • Familiarity and interest in issues related to energy, economics, the environment, corporate citizenship, and government relations.

  • Familiarity with New Mexico, having lived or studied in New Mexico a plus.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong internal and external relationships.

  • Sound business judgment and proactive communications to management.

  • Ability to manage budgets and rigorous controls with solid stewardship capability.

  • Flexibility and drive with an energetic and dynamic approach to problem solving.

  • Capable of working with remote management across different cultures.
