ExxonMobil Corporate Counsel - Environmental/Regulatory Section in Spring, Texas

Job Summary

Exxon Mobil Corporation (ExxonMobil) is looking for an attorney with experience in environmental law, including environmental regulatory (soil, water and air), environmental litigation and/or government environmental enforcement matters. Environmental experience is preferred. The attorney will handle a dynamic portfolio of environmental matters, with potential for opportunities on other matters arising from ExxonMobil’s global businesses. The attorney’s first assignment will be in the Environmental & Safety Law group with the opportunity to move into other Law groups as their career and experience progress.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide legal analysis and counsel on environmental matters for ExxonMobil and its affiliates

  • Represent the Company in dealings with third parties, including but not limited to, federal, state, or local environmental or other agencies or representatives

  • Negotiate agreements, including but not limited to permits, consent decrees, and other similar agreements

  • Provide environmental legal support as needed in connection with projects in or outside the United States

  • Conduct and coordinate research into a variety of legal issues, ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and Company policy, anticipate and address legal risks and exposures for the Company

  • Participate in preparation and review of comments on proposed regulations

  • Conduct and coordinate environmental compliance investigations

  • Prepare and review presentations, documents, and pleadings as relevant and necessary and associated with the above matters

  • Coordinate with and oversee outside counsel to ensure proper handling of matters where counsel is retained

Job Requirements:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school

  • Strong college and law school record (top 1/3 of class preferred)

  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state (Texas bar membership strongly preferred)

  • Minimum of three (3) years of legal experience in a law firm, corporation or agency

  • Strong research and writing skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Demonstrated litigation or regulatory work experience

  • Experience in handling complex legal issues and working with governmental entities

  • Strong negotiating skills

  • Reputation for high ethical standards and integrity

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to exercise sound business judgment

  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge working with regulated industry and/or with environmental laws and regulations

  • Prior experience with environmental compliance counseling and advice

  • Experience in negotiating with government agencies

  • Experience with litigation and/or administrative, civil, or criminal enforcement matters
